The photo series of “Wrapped in Healing” presents portraits of local healers in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Portrayed as they wanted to be seen, engaged and wrapped in the magic of their profession. From a young and modern healer that took on the job as his new business, to the remaining few elders that hold on to traditional practices; from the protection against witchcraft, to the healing of common problems in life; from birth to death, and from business to politics. Each healer has his own approach and perspective on tools, ritual and treatment. Wrapped in healing, as the belief in their capacities is omnipresent. It is a world hidden to most of us, but highly prevalent and inspiring and at the same time so much part of the Tanzanian way of life.
These series are part of a larger work “Worship and Healing in the Southern highlands of Tanzania’, 2010-2013
The portraits of the Healers were exhibited at Museum Hilversum 2013, http://eepurl.com/YJj2r
and nominated as portfolio in the 5th Edition of the Julia Margaret cameron Award 2013,
